In late January, the seven states that rely on the Colorado River for water failed to strike a water-sharing deal by the federally mandated deadline. Because the states were unable to come to an agreement, the Biden administration — led by the federal Bureau of Reclamation — may have to intervene and impose regional water cuts at a time when the states involved continue to battle droughts and historically low reservoirs.
